While researching the archives of another HBCU, I accidentally came across this photo of this most gracious lady. If I am correct, she was born several years after my great grandmother the late Mrs. Marindy Little-Green who was born in 1859 in Ila, Georgia. Great-Grandma Marindy and my great grandfather Green Little founded a school in Ila, Georgia called Tabors Chapel School which was a part of Tabor Chapel CME Church also in Ila. Education still rocks and resonates with me for you see I am LJ Steele; MA and my grandmother was Hattie Carrie Jane Tabor who wanted to attend Spelman College. However, her parents did not have the money, so she continued to read and learn on her own with the help of both her folks. She married into the Tabor family in 1910, had several children which included my mom the late Mrs. Jimmie Tabor-Steele who became a teacher and was an alumnus of both Livingstone College and also NCCU. So am I. Southern University has always had a special place in my heart because one of my great Aunts, the late Sophrona Steele taught at SUNO for many years in the Dept. of Dance, Health and Physical Education at SUNO. Her husband was Dr. Leon Steele, who was a professor of Middle School Education at Albany State College (now Albany State University in Albany, Georgia) for many years. He was one of my dad’s uncles and my dad’s family is from North Carolina, with my mom’s family being from Ila, Georgia. Finally, my dad is an alumnus of NC A&T State University, where he was a Mechanical Engineering major. Mrs. Craig is now one of my newest role models.
